This year’s symposium is all about music. The sounds and melodies ring through past and present. More than two thousand years ago, Plato argued that music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. Musical expressions can be found throughout the ages and are an unmissable feature of the human existence. It is for this reason, that it ought to be the humanities to study this remarkable subject.

Sadly enough, such an important subject had been very much overlooked up until now. It has been seen as an art, not as a science of humanities. While at the same time it is music which binds and connects cultures and humanity. Musical studies cross the different borders of studies but unites the humanities. Therefore, the time has come to pay homage to humanities companion, the science of music in all its forms. From Heavy Metal to Electronic Dance Music and from singer-songwriters to Steelpan Music: this year’s Faculty symposium takes you to all ‘the sounds of music’!
